Results vary between patients. What this treatment can be expected to do for your skin is discussed with you at your consultation, and is not promised here.
The treatment
Rejuran is a sterile injectable gel containing sodium polynucleotide, purified from salmon DNA. It is administered into the dermis by a registered medical practitioner to promote tissue restoration and improve the appearance of the skin.
Whether it is appropriate for you, and what it would involve, is decided at an individual assessment rather than online.

Dr Pedro Valente founded The Skin Wellness Hub to bring medical oversight to skin health and aesthetic care. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the University of Tasmania, has been a registered medical practitioner since 2007, and holds specialist registration in general practice as a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).
Being doctor-led means every treatment plan here starts with a medical history: your health, your medications, and anything that changes which treatments are appropriate for you. That is the difference between a clinic run by a doctor and one that only has a doctor’s name on the door.

You will be looked after by Dr Valente and the dermal and medical team from your first visit. Rejuran is injected by a registered medical practitioner. Your skin assessment, skin treatments and aftercare are with our dermal therapists, working together under Dr Valente’s clinical direction. Your plan and notes are shared across the team, so whoever you see knows your skin and your history, and you can book your skin treatments directly with the dermal team.
Where it comes up
These are the concerns people most often bring to an assessment where Rejuran is one of the options discussed. Raising a concern here does not mean this treatment is the answer to it. Which option suits you, if any, is decided after your skin has been assessed.
The mechanism
Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, the building blocks that make up DNA. The polynucleotide used in Rejuran is purified from salmon DNA and prepared as a sterile gel.
The gel is injected into the dermis, the layer of skin beneath the surface, across a series of small injection points. It is placed there rather than applied to the surface because the dermis is where the change it is registered to promote takes place.
Rejuran is included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a Class III medical device, under the term “dermal tissue reconstructive material, animal derived”. Its registered purpose is to promote tissue restoration and improve the appearance of the skin. That is the limit of what it is registered to do, and it is the limit of what this page will tell you it does.
It does not add volume and it does not act on the muscles of the face. What it is registered to do is set out above, and that is the whole of it.
It is administered by a registered medical practitioner. Dr Valente performs the treatment himself, and the assessment that decides whether you should have it at all.
Step by step
01
Your skin is assessed, your medical history and current medications are taken, and whether this treatment is appropriate for you is decided. If it is not, you are told so.
02
A topical anaesthetic is applied and left to take effect. The gel is then injected across a series of small points in the treatment area.
03
Allow extra time in the clinic for the topical anaesthetic to take effect before the treatment begins.
04
You will have visible pinpoint marks at each injection site, and some redness and swelling. Most people go back to their usual activities the same day, with the marks still visible.
05
Any change is gradual rather than immediate, and is generally looked for over a period of weeks rather than days. It varies between patients and some people notice less than others.
06
It is usually given as a course of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with the number decided at your assessment rather than set in advance.
Important information
Outcomes vary between patients
This treatment does not produce the same result in every person, and it does not produce a result in every person. No particular outcome is promised. What is realistic for your skin is discussed with you at your consultation, based on your own assessment.
This is an injectable treatment and it carries risks. The following are discussed with you in full before you consent.
Common, and expected:
Less common, and requiring treatment:
This list is written for this treatment specifically and is not a complete account of everything that can happen. Contact the clinic if anything concerns you after treatment.
Expect visible injection marks and some redness and swelling for a few days, and any bruising can take a little longer to settle. Some people settle sooner and some take longer.
You can generally return to work and everyday activities the same day, with the marks still visible. Exercise, heat, swimming and make-up over the treated area are restricted for a period that is set out in your aftercare instructions.
If you have an event coming up, tell Dr Valente at your consultation so treatment can be timed around it.
Any change is gradual and is assessed over a course of treatment rather than after a single session. How long any change lasts varies between patients and depends on your skin, your age, your health and how the treatment is maintained. Both are discussed with you at your assessment, in relation to your own skin, rather than stated as a general figure here.
Nobody is treated on a first visit without assessment. Suitability is determined at an individual consultation with Dr Valente, and any treatment plan follows that assessment.

Suitability
This is not a complete list. Bring your full medical history and every medication and supplement you take to your consultation, including anything you buy without a prescription.
Afterwards
You are given written aftercare instructions before you leave, and they are specific to what you have had done. In general terms they cover keeping the area clean, leaving the injection points alone, and avoiding heat, strenuous exercise and sun exposure for a stated period.
Follow the instructions you are given at the clinic in preference to anything you read here or anywhere else.
Questions
Cost is discussed with you at your assessment, once it is clear what you would actually be having and over how many sessions. We do not publish prices, because a figure quoted before anyone has looked at your skin is not a real figure.
It is given as a course rather than a single appointment, and the number of sessions is decided at your assessment. It depends on your skin and on what you and Dr Valente agree you are aiming for.
It is a series of injections, so you will feel it. A topical anaesthetic is applied first to reduce the discomfort. Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than severe, but people differ, and if you find it difficult tell Dr Valente during the treatment rather than afterwards.
Usually yes, on the same day, but you will have visible pinpoint marks and some redness and swelling when you do. If that matters for a particular day, plan the timing at your consultation.
Yes. It is included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a Class III medical device. Its ARTG number is stated on the consent material you are given at the clinic.
Any change is gradual and is generally looked for over weeks rather than days, across a course of treatment. It varies between patients and no particular outcome is promised.
Sometimes, and sometimes not, depending on what the other treatment is and when you had it. Bring a list of anything you have had done recently to your consultation.
