Excision Wound Care

Proper post-procedure care is essential for optimal wound healing, infection prevention, and minimal scarring. Follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery.

Immediate Wound Care (First 3 Days)

✔ Keep the wound dry and covered with the original dressing for at least three days, unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.
✔ Avoid disturbing the dressing to allow the initial healing process to take place.

Protecting the wound in the first few days helps prevent infection and promotes better healing.

Cleaning & Dressing the Wound (After 3 Days)

✔ Remove the dressing and gently clean the wound using normal saline and sterile gauze, or wash with mild soap and warm water.
✔ Do NOT use antiseptics like Betadine or hydrogen peroxide, as they may delay healing.
✔ Pat the area dry with clean gauze or a soft towel—avoid rubbing the wound.

Reapplying a Dressing
✔ Use a waterproof dressing that provides protection while allowing you to shower.
✔ Ensure sutures remain covered by the dressing’s padding.
✔ Change the dressing if:

  • It becomes very wet or does not dry properly.
  • You are exercising or sweating (replace the dressing afterward, ensuring the area is cleaned beforehand).
✔ If prescribed an antibiotic ointment, apply a thin layer twice daily before covering the wound.

A clean and protected wound heals faster and reduces the risk of infection.

Activity & Movement Precautions

✔ Limit excessive movement in the affected area to prevent tension on the wound while sutures are in place.
✔ Avoid strenuous exercise, stretching, or pressure on the healing area until sutures are removed.

Minimizing movement helps prevent wound reopening and improves healing.
